Tribute to Armed Services at Sunday's Sounders match

This Sunday I had the privilege of representing the Coast Guard along with servicemembers from the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps on the Seattle Sounders’ pitch for Military Appreciation Day.

This is the inaugural season for the Sounders, and it was humbling to represent my branch of service and represent members of the Armed Services recognized by the Sounder organization as well as the fans.

My humility extends to being responsible for handling an M-1 Garand during a close order drill in front of 20,000+ Sounders fans, something I haven’t done in more than 2 years since Recruit Training in Cape May, NJ. Needless to say the experience renewed my respect for Honor Guard units throughout the Armed Services.

Post detail, the members of the color guard remained at Qwest Field as guests of the Sounders, observing a focused and talented team defeat the Colorado Rapids, three-nil, or three to zero for those non-futbolers out there.

Thank you to Air Force Staff Sgt. Housey, Army Sgt. Gallagher, Navy Petty Officer Berrien and Marine Corps Corporal Johnson, the other servicemembers of the color guard detail I had the honor of working with Sunday.

Special thanks to Army Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew Barnes and Navy Command Master Chief Michael Schanchel for their time organizing and directing the color guard.

Finally, thank you to the Seattle Sounders and fans for your continuing support of those that serve our country.
