Edmonds Waterfront Clean-up

There are many roles the Coast Guard assumes on a daily basis. Both volunteering in the community and environmental protection are two of those roles that small boat stations take pride in.

Members of Coast Guard Station Seattle participated in a clean-up effort along the waterfront of Edmonds, Wash., Oct. 10, 2008.

Petty Officer Kurtis Mees, Station Seattle’s training officer, describes the day’s events.

The volunteers consisted of Station Seattle personnel who helped clean-up the Edmonds waterfront, ferry terminal and the surrounding recreational areas, such as Brackett’s Landing and Marina Beach. I initiated, hosted and oversaw the completion of the clean-up with the direction and guidance of Sally Lider, the Environmental Education Coordinator for the Edmonds Parks and Recreation.

This clean-up was in an effort to improve the conditions around these recreational areas while also demonstrating to the public Station Seattle’s willingness and commitment to community service.

In all we had 21 participants in the event who contributed over 60 hours of volunteer times. Additionally, this would have never been made possible without the willingness and support of the Station Seattle Command Cadre, which consist of Lt. Melanie Burnham, Commanding Officer, Ltjg. Scott Farr, Executive Officer, Chief Petty Officer Richard Berg, Operational Officer, and Chief Petty Officer Mark Gonzales, Engineering Petty Officer.
